Geotechnical Engineering Services in Marin County

AC Engineering provides geotechnical investigations and design recommendations for residential and small-commercial projects across Marin County and the surrounding North Bay.

Every project begins with a review of available geologic, fault, and landslide mapping for the parcel. Subsurface investigation typically uses ASTM D1586 exploratory borings advanced by a licensed drilling subcontractor. Construction observation services during foundation, retaining wall, and OWTS installation are available on request and are recommended.

Recommendations are written to be useful to the design team, not just to satisfy code minimums. Reports are prepared with the structural engineer, architect, contractor, and plan checker as the intended readers, and the engineering rationale behind each recommendation is documented so the team can adapt to field conditions without going back to first principles.

What is a Geotechnical Investigation?
A geotechnical investigation, also called a soil report, evaluates the soil, rock, and groundwater conditions at a project site. It establishes the engineering parameters that foundations, retaining walls, and other structures are designed to: bearing capacity, settlement potential, slope stability, and seismic risks including liquefaction and fault proximity. Marin County and most lenders require a geotechnical report for new construction, additions on hillside parcels, and any project within a mapped Seismic Hazard zone.

AC Engineering Inc. offers Geotechnical Reports and Design Recommendations for:

New single-family residence (SFR)

New additions to existing SFR

New accessory dwelling units (ADU)

Replacement (underpinning) foundations for existing SFR

Retaining walls

On-site Wastewater Systems (OWTS)
